The Fundación Casa México presents tomorrow Tuesday at 7 pm in its multipurpose room the book Vida de María Sabina. La sabia de los hongos (Life of Maria Sabina. The Sage of the Mushrooms), by Álvaro Estrada. To attend the presentation it is essential to register at this link.
In this work, Álvaro Estrada collects the voice and thought of the legendary Mazatec healer, whose ancestral wisdom and deep connection with nature made her one of the most important spiritual figures in Mexico.
Through extensive conversations in Mazatec and his direct participation in the “holy children” rituals, Estrada presents a unique oral autobiography: the living testimony of a woman who claimed to be “knew from the very womb of her mother, woman of winds, water and roads”.
Life of Maria Sabina transcends the biographical account to offer a fascinating look at the indigenous worldview, the relations between the body and nature, between the earthly and the transcendent. Considered by Octavio Paz as “an extraordinary document whose interest is twofold: anthropological and human”, the book has been translated into English, French, Italian and Portuguese.
The event will be attended by anthropologist and historian María Treviño Garza and journalist Fernanda Fernández. María Treviño Garza has a degree in Literature and Creative Writing. She has a master’s degree in American history and anthropology and works as a bookseller in Pergamon. Fernanda Fernández works in the program A vivir que son dos días of the SER Chain since 2022. Specialized in international information, has collaborated with Revista 5W, El Grand Continent, CTXT and with the broadcast of Radio Nacional de España in French. It is defined as chilangomadrilean.
