Zelensky and Xi Jinping join international condolences for the Adamuz train accident

Eduardo González Several international leaders have joined the messages of solidarity with Spain following the train accident in Adamuz, Córdoba, including the presidents of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and China, Xi Jinping. “I am grateful for all the expressions of support and solidarity conveyed to me by my counterparts around the world during these painful times for Spain,” Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares wrote on social media on Tuesday. In the hours following the accident, messages of condolence have poured in from many European governments and prominent international players such as the United States, Russia, Iran, and Israel. The Ukrainian government has been one of the most active in expressing its support. “We express our condolences to our Spanish friends for the loss of life in the terrible train accident in Córdoba,” Zelensky wrote on social media. “We share the grief of the victims’ families and wish all those injured a speedy recovery. We wish strength to our friendly Spanish people,” he added. “We share the grief of the kind Spanish people and send our condolences to the families of the victims. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. Stay strong, dear Spanish friends!” declared Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. “On behalf of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, I express my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to the kind Spanish people. Spain has always supported Ukraine in our most difficult times, and today we share their grief,” wrote Speaker of Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk. For his part, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message to the King of Spain on Tuesday to express his “dismay” at the accident and to convey, “on behalf of the Government and people of China,” his “deepest condolences to the victims, his sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased,” and his wishes for “a speedy recovery to the injured.” Chinese Premier Li Qiang also sent a message of condolence to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday. The King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz, also sent a message to the King of Spain to express his “condolences” for the victims of the train accident. The Government of Argentina expressed “its deepest solidarity with the Kingdom of Spain and its people in the face of the tragic train accident that occurred yesterday in the municipality of Córdoba” and expressed its “deepest sorrow for the fatalities and its heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.” The Chilean government has expressed its sorrow for the fatalities and injuries sustained in the serious train accident and has sent its condolences to the families of the deceased and its solidarity with the Government of the Kingdom of Spain. Similarly, the Brazilian government has expressed its dismay at the accident, offered its condolences to the victims and their families, and expressed its solidarity with the Spanish people and government.
