Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has condemned the “new massive attacks by Russia against energy facilities and residential areas in Ukraine,” and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, thanked him for “Spain’s unconditional support” in the face of these “war crimes.”
Russia launched a new wave of drone and missile attacks, including Kinschal hypersonic missiles, against Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure on Saturday, on the eve of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The meeting took place on Sunday in Florida, and both leaders discussed the 20-point peace plan proposed by Washington. At the end of the meeting, Trump declared that the parties are “much” closer to an agreement. Minutes before the meeting, Trump held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“New massive Russian attacks on energy facilities and residential areas in Ukraine have left much of Kyiv and other parts of the country without electricity and heating tonight, causing dozens of casualties,” Albares wrote on social media on Saturday. “These attacks exacerbate the suffering of the civilian population and constitute violations of international law. They must stop,” he continued. “Spain will continue to support Ukraine and all efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace,” he concluded.
“Thank you, José Manuel Albares, for Spain’s unconditional support,” wrote Andrii Sybiha. “Russian attacks on energy and residential areas are war crimes and must stop,” he warned. “The international community must increase pressure on Moscow and ensure it is held accountable. Together, we remain committed to achieving a lasting peace,” he added.
For his part, Zelensky published a lengthy statement on social media in which he denounced the Russian attack and asked, “Where is Russia’s response to the proposals to end the war put forward by the United States and the world?”
“This is the true attitude of Putin and his inner circle. They do not want to end the war and seek to seize every opportunity to inflict even more suffering on Ukraine and increase their pressure on others around the world,” he warned. “This sickening activity can only be countered with truly decisive steps. The United States has this capability. Europe has this capability. Many of our partners have this capability. The key is to harness it,” he added.
