The Spanish government congratulated the new president of Honduras, Nasry Asfura, on Thursday, December 25. Asfura has received the express support of US President Donald Trump, and Spain expressed its “full willingness to continue working with the people and government of Honduras.”

“With the National Electoral Council’s vote count of the presidential elections now complete, and Nasry Asfura declared the winner, Spain congratulates the new president of Honduras and expresses its full willingness to continue working with the people and government of Honduras,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release. “We trust that the challenges initiated during the recount will be resolved with the utmost transparency,” it added.

Nasry Asfura, former mayor of Tegucigalpa, has been declared the president-elect of Honduras with 40.27% of the vote, compared to 39.53% for his rival, the right-wing Salvador Nasralla, according to official data from the Honduran National Electoral Council (CNE).

The results were announced this Wednesday after a three-week vote recount marked by technical problems and allegations of fraud by Nasralla, whose party, the Liberal Party, has announced it will challenge the election results before the CNE due to irregularities.

Nasry Asfura had received the explicit support of Trump, who declared via his Truth Social account that “democracy is on the line in the upcoming elections in the beautiful country of Honduras.” “Will Maduro and his narco-terrorists take control of another country as they did with Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela? The one who defends democracy and fights against Maduro is Tito Asfura, the presidential candidate of the National Party,” he added.

For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged on Wednesday “all parties to respect the confirmed results so that Honduran authorities can quickly guarantee a peaceful transition of power to the president-elect, Nasry Asfura.”

Trump has even announced a pardon for former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, a member of Asfura’s party, who in 2024 was convicted on drug trafficking charges in the United States and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
