The Council of Ministers authorized on Tuesday, December 9, a voluntary contribution from Spain to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for activities supporting refugees and displaced persons from Mali in the M’Bera Camp, Mauritania, amounting to two million euros.

“The stability of Mauritania, a neighboring country of the EU and, in particular, of Spain (with a maritime border with the Canary Islands), is threatened by the deteriorating political and security situation in the Sahel,” the Council of Ministers declared.

“A country of transit and, increasingly, of destination, the massive influx of refugees has generated a humanitarian crisis in the Hodh el Chargui region, bordering Mali, jeopardizing the country’s fragile demographic balance,” it continued.

The aim of this two million euro contribution is to “improve the living conditions of refugees and host communities in the Hodh Chargui region, particularly in the M’Bera camp.”
