The Spanish Government has welcomed the peace agreement signed Thursday in Washington between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
“Spain remains committed to peace in the Great Lakes region and welcomes this significant step towards stability, regional cooperation, and overcoming the conflict, which has profoundly affected the populations of both countries and the entire region,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release on Saturday.
“We commend the commitment of the parties and the mediation of the US, Qatar, and Togo,” it continued. “Spain encourages the parties to continue implementing the commitments made in a firm and constructive manner,” it concluded.
The presidents of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, and Rwanda, Paul Kagame, signed the peace agreement Thursday in Washington, in the presence of US President Donald Trump.
The following day, the European Union welcomed “the signing of the Washington Agreements for Peace and Prosperity, including the Regional Economic Integration Framework, by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and the President of the DRC.” The European Commission, according to a statement from the spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, also “commends the efforts of the United States.”
