Greece’s new ambassador, Apostolos Baltas, presented his Letters of Credence

Οn Monday, the new ambassador of Greece to Spain, Apostolos Baltas, presented his Letters of Credence to the Director General of Protocol, Adrián Martín Couce,at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to embassy sources who spoke to The Diplomat.

Ambassador Baltas is a senior career diplomat with more than three decades of service. He joined the Hellenic Diplomatic Service in 1993, beginning his career at the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister in Athens. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to the Embassy of Greece in Belgrade, where he served in the Political Department and as Consul.

In 1998, Ambassador Baltas moved to Brussels to serve at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union, and upon his return to Athens in 2003, he worked at the Political Director’s Office and within the Cabinet of the Alternate Foreign Minister.

Between 2005 and 2008, he was posted to the Embassy of Greece in Beijing as Deputy Head of Mission, followed by a six-year period at the Embassy of Greece in Paris, where he likewise served as Deputy Head of Mission and Consul.

In 2014, he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens to assume responsibilities as Deputy Director for the Department of Southeastern Europe and two years later, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Counselor at the Greek Embassy in Ankara, where he served from 2016 to 2019.

From 2019 to 2022, Ambassador Baltas served as Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic in Jakarta. In 2022, he became Director of the Türkiye Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before being appointed, in 2023, Director-General for Personnel and Administrative Organization of the Ministry.

Ambassador Baltas holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Athens School of Economics. He speaks English and French fluently. He is married and has no children. “Ambassador Baltas is poised to further strengthen the historic, cultural, political, and economic ties between Greece and Spain”, the same sources highlighted.
