The longest-running musical in the world, having surpassed 16,000 performances in the West End alone, Les Misérables, premieres today at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid (Plaza Tirso de Molina, 1).
This musical, based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, has become the most successful musical of all time, with performances in 438 cities across 57 countries, translated into 22 languages, and applauded by more than 150 million spectators.
Les Misérables is a moving story of broken dreams, unrequited love, passion, sacrifice, and redemption—a timeless testament to the enduring power of the human spirit. The musical explores themes such as justice, sacrifice, and hope. Boublil and Schönberg’s iconic score includes unforgettable songs such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?” and “One Day More,” among many others.
Winner of over 180 international awards, including 8 Tony Awards, 4 Olivier Awards, and 5 Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical, Les Misérables paved the way for the 2012 film adaptation, which became one of the most successful musical films of all time, winning 3 Academy Awards and receiving 5 more nominations, including Best Picture. It was also voted “the greatest musical of all time” in a BBC2 poll, and a special version of “Do You Hear the People Sing?” was released. It was presented at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
