The Spanish Government condemned on Tuesday, November 25, the Israeli army’s bombings against Beirut and other areas of Lebanon, as well as the repeated attacks against the positions of the UN mission (UNIFIL), “the latest of which threatened the physical integrity of the Spanish contingent.”
Likewise, the Spanish Government expressed its “deep concern” about Israel’s unilateral decision to build a wall within Lebanese territory, thereby violating both the demarcation line—the Blue Line—defined by the United Nations and Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The Spanish Government urges Israel to comply with its obligations under international law and with the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024,” the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued. “The best guarantee of security and for lasting peace in the Middle East is the effective implementation of the two-state solution,” it added.
“Spain reiterates its commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability of Lebanon and to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701, reaffirming its support for the UNIFIL mandate, whose work is essential for achieving these objectives,” it concluded.
The Israeli army killed the deputy commander of the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah and head of its Chief of Staff, Haisam Ali Tabatabi, in an airstrike in Dahye, south of Beirut, on Sunday, as confirmed by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Lebanese organization itself. According to the Israeli army, the attack also resulted in four other deaths and 28 injuries.
To date, nearly 10,000 violations of the Israeli-Lebanese ceasefire of November 27, 2024, have been recorded, UNIFIL reported last week. Israel has justified these attacks by citing the need to prevent Hezbollah from rearming, which, in its view, would constitute a violation of the truce. Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on Sunday for international intervention to prevent an escalation, and the United States has justified these attacks as invoking Israel’s right to self-defense.
