The Diplomat

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares met this Tuesday, November 18, in Madrid with his Colombian counterpart, Yolanda Villavicencio, with whom he renewed the Partnership Framework for Sustainable Development for the next five years.
According to a press release from the Ministry, this agreement will allow them to continue working on shared priorities, such as gender equality, institutional strengthening, and climate change, among others. Through this signing, according to the Minister, Spain reaffirms its commitment to continue working alongside Colombia, not only as a technical partner, but also as a “political ally.” The two ministers also signed the declaration resulting from the High-Level Commission between the two countries, which encompasses the various aspects of the bilateral relationship in areas such as legal and consular cooperation, cultural and educational affairs, scientific and technological matters, economic and trade issues, and political matters. Albares and Villavicencio also addressed issues such as the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, security, and the recognition of academic degrees. They also discussed the commitment to increase coordination at the regional and global levels, with the next Ibero-American Summit, to be held in Madrid in November 2026, in mind, and in light of complex situations such as those in Venezuela, Palestine, and Ukraine.
