The Diplomat
The former ambassador of El Salvador to Spain, Joaquín Alexander Maza Martelli, died last Sunday, October 26, due to a heart disease in the Vatican City, where he was currently exercising his diplomatic duties.
Veteran Salvadoran diplomat Joaquín Alexander Maza Martelli was appointed in April 2023 as El Salvador’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain by President Nayib Bukele.
The Salvadoran diplomat was currently serving as the diplomatic representative of El Salvador to the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta; a position he also held with the Governments of Panama, Colombia, Switzerland, the Kingdom of Spain and the Principality of Andorra. He was also consul general in the United Kingdom.
A graduate of the University of El Salvador in International Relations, Joaquín Maza Martelli has held various positions in the public and private sectors, in the areas of agriculture, tourism, senior management and diplomacy.
From November 1986 to May 1989, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, after having been Director-General for Foreign Policy, Technical Adviser to the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy in Nicaragua, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy in Honduras, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy in Mexico, First Secretary and Consul General in Great Britain, and Deputy Director for Central American Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His commitment to dialogue and the search for agreements, as well as his dynamism in the concert of nations led him to be elected by UN member countries to assume the position of President of the Human Rights Council.
Last Monday, the Government of El Salvador, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held funeral ceremonies and installed the Burning Chapel to say goodbye to Ambassador Maza Martelli.
