Foreign Ministry and the International Association of Lawyers will jointly promote Spanish in the legal world

The Diplomat The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) have signed an agreement for the joint promotion of the Spanish language in the legal world, at a cost of 5,000 euros. The agreement, signed on October 13 by the Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Susana Sumelzo, and the president of the UIA, Carlo Mastellone, and published eight days later in the Official State Gazette (BOE), aims to foster collaboration between both parties in promoting Spanish as a working language among lawyers and jurists around the world through the 2025 UIA Annual Congress, which will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, between October 29 and November 2 of this year. The Annual Congress typically brings together around 1,000 lawyers from around the world and allows the Association to meet with the various Committees and Working Groups that, throughout the year, hold seminars and various independent meetings. It also allows for extensive sessions on two main topics, usually cross-cutting and chosen for each Congress. This year, the current and future of dispute resolution related to foreign investment and other topics related to agri-food, sustainability, and international trade are planned to be addressed. The Ministry's contribution will cover the administrative costs for the forum of Spanish-speaking lawyers and simultaneous interpretation and translation into and from Spanish at this event. To this end, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs undertakes to finance, up to a maximum amount of five thousand euros, the expenses for interpretation and translation into Spanish at the 2025 UIA Annual Congress, in accordance with the budget for the 2025 fiscal year. The amount established in the agreement is unalterable, and increases will not be permitted unless expressly agreed in writing by the parties.
