Nearly 100 Spaniards are detained or currently serving prison sentences in Morocco

Eduardo González At least 97 Spanish citizens are detained or currently serving prison sentences in Morocco, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In response to a written parliamentary question from the People's Party (PP) Group in Congress, filed on September 15, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is aware of "97 individuals of Spanish nationality detained or serving sentences in Moroccan prisons," a group whose cases are "at very different stages of their respective proceedings." "The Embassy in Rabat and the Spanish Consulates in Morocco provide them with appropriate consular assistance and ensure that their fundamental rights are respected, as well as the principles of a fair trial with guarantees during their detention, as well as food, hygiene, and health conditions that comply with international standards," continues the parliamentary response, issued on October 8 and published this week. "Regarding the aid this group receives, it is the same as any Spanish citizen can apply for if they are detained or serving a prison sentence abroad," the Foreign Ministry states, specifying that this is the aid included in Order AUC/154/2022, of February 21, which regulates protection and consular assistance abroad. Furthermore, "and as is customary with Spanish detainees abroad, staff from the Spanish Consulates make periodic visits to the detainees to gather information about their condition and provide the corresponding aid," the Foreign Ministry continues, also highlighting "the important communication work carried out by the Spanish Consulates with the families of the detainees."
