The seventh edition of MestizoLab, a Spanish-Mexican audiovisual co-production forum, will be held from today until next Monday, September 29 at various venues in Madrid. Casa de América will host some of the activities of this meeting between professionals of the audiovisual sector in Ibero-America, with a focus on the creation of alliances between Mexico and Spain.

Since its creation, Mestizolab has established itself as a platform for dialogue, training and professional liaison. Each edition brings together creators, producers, institutions and experts from the audiovisual industry to build networks of collaboration across borders.

Programme at Casa de América:

Friday, 26 September

16:30. Conversation ‘Ethics and artificial intelligence in the use of stock images’

A dialogue on the ethical challenges and possibilities offered by artificial intelligence for preservation, classification and re-use of audiovisual archives. Film and technology experts will share perspectives on how these tools impact the work of film libraries and the future of film heritage. Luis Parés, artistic director of Cineteca Matadero, and Javier Leal, CTO of New Art will participate. Moderated by Ciro Murayama, director of the UNAM-Spain Center for Mexican Studies.

18:00. Conversation ‘Use and resignification of cinematographic files’

Reflection on the cultural and creative value of film archives, and the ways in which these materials can be given new life in contemporary narratives. Through the eyes of filmmakers, scriptwriters and conservation specialists, we will analyze the creative and technical processes that allow us to transform archives into new cultural works. Participants: José Manuel Cravioto, film director; Marian del Egido, director of the Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Filmoteca Española, and Alberto Macías, screenwriter of the series Cuéntame cómo pasó… Moderator: Hugo Villa, director general of Cinematographic Activities and Film Library at UNAM.

19:30. Projection and colloquium – Autos, mota & rocanrol (José Manuel Cravioto, Mexico, 2025)

Synopsis: Justino y el Negro wanted to organize a car race and a small concert to do the business of their lives. But everything went wrong and they ended up creating the biggest concert in the history of Mexico: the festival of Avándaro. A colloquium will then take place in the presence of José Manuel Cravioto, Mexican filmmaker, and Hugo Villa, director general of Cinematographic Activities and Film Library at UNAM. Sergio Guerrero, filmmaker, will moderate.

Monday, 29 September

19:00. Screening and colloquium – The end of intolerance (Sergio Guerrero, USA, 2019)

Synopsis: A powerful story about police violence and prejudice faced by minority communities in the United States, followed by a colloquium with director Sergio Guerrero.
