President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Wednesday before the UN that Spain will join the Global Initiative for Climate Change Data Integrity.

“Disinformation not only creates confusion and spreads fake news; in the context of the climate emergency, it also puts lives and property at risk. Climate disinformation kills,” Sánchez warned during his speech at the high-level event on Climate Action in preparation for the upcoming COP30 in Belém, Brazil, held at the United Nations headquarters.

The event, organized by the United Nations Secretary-General and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together heads of state and government to analyze the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the action plans each country presents to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change, helping to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

The president warned of the urgency of redoubling efforts to address the climate emergency, following the hottest summer on record, in which fires devastated nearly 400,000 hectares in Spain.

Therefore, he reiterated Spain’s commitment to working alongside its other European partners to present a science-aligned NDC that will achieve the goal of a 90% emissions reduction by 2040. “Combating the climate emergency is not an abstract idea,” he warned. It’s about “protecting our homes, our jobs, and our way of life,” he concluded.
