Centro Danza Matadero de Madrid presents De Scheherezade, one of the latest flamenco creations by María Pagés Compañía, a reference for international contemporary flamenco.
The show can be seen in Nave 11 of this space from September 26 to October 5, with performances from Friday to Sunday.
María Pagés Compañía resumes the flamenco dance with a montage structured in twelve scenes, with solos and choral choreographies perfectly spun around the polyhedral and diverse feminine essence, which combines the individual uniqueness of each performer and the overwhelming strength of the group. This woman, who is all women, goes through the story and shares with the public her knowledge, contradictions, loves, heartbreaks, strengths and weaknesses. The choreographies capture a female diversity that takes hold of the action to conquer the stage, real and symbolically.
Under the direction of María Pagés and El Arbi El Harti, and through 17 interpreters who think and interpret in choral key the wonderful world of women and the word, De Scheherezade explores the popular musical report, classical and flamenco, investigating especially Moroccan music with a string quartet and percussion, accompanied by an Arabic voice and two powerful and suggestive flamenco voices.
De Scheherezade is inspired by the mythical character from the tale of One Thousand and One Nights. The dramaturgy of El Arbi El Harti starts from the contemporary interpretation of female characters that have marked the world of universal culture, continuing the work of both in I, Carmen (2015). In that sense, in this work of maturity and organic assumption of flamenco art and choreography, Pagés and El Harti deepen the empathy of women, placing sonority as the foundation of a female voice that stands up to express and claim the polyhedral reality of women’s everyday life. Tickets are for sale on the website of Centro Danza Matadero, at the box office of Matadero (plaza de Legazpi, 8) and in Casa de la Panadería (plaza Mayor, 27).
