<h6><strong>Eduardo González</strong></h6> <h4><strong>As expected, US President Donald Trump's address to the United Nations General Assembly generated several headlines, in which he accused NATO member countries of “buying oil and gas from Russia when they are fighting against it” and denounced that unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state would amount to “a reward for Hamas for its horrific atrocities.”</strong></h4> “In seven months, I ended seven endless wars, which they said were endless,” unlike the UN, which offered little help and limited itself to issuing “very strong” words that “do not resolve the war,” Trump said in his speech during the opening of the 80th General Assembly, which was attended by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. “In the face of global challenges, we need more multilateralism, more green transition, and more peace. Spain will continue to support the UN so that it can be the home of dialogue and shared solutions,” wrote the Prime Minister. According to Trump, he “always” thought the war in Ukraine would be the “easiest” to resolve thanks to his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead, he stated, the conflict has dragged on for three years, “killing between five and seven thousand young people every week.” In this regard, the US president offered to end the war through tariffs: “If Russia doesn't end the war, the United States will impose very strict tariffs that would end it quickly, but the Europeans must also adopt them.” He also accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries of hypocrisy: “They are buying oil and gas from Russia when they are fighting against it,” he denounced. Meanwhile, Trump urged immediate action in Gaza and the release of all hostages, warning that unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state would amount to "rewarding Hamas for its horrific atrocities." The US president also denounced Iran as the "world's leading sponsor of terrorism" and once again boasted that, with Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities "completely destroyed," his administration had also mediated to end the 12-day war. As was also predictable, Trump used his remarks to harshly criticize the United Nations system: "Many years ago, I offered $500 million to rebuild the United Nations, but they decided to go another way, resulting in a much inferior complex," he lamented. "They spent between $2 billion and $4 billion and didn't even get the marble floors I promised them," he added. Regarding migration, he stated that in 2024 the UN spent $372 million in cash to support 624,000 migrants who traveled to the United States through the southern border. “The UN is supposed to stop invasions, not promote them,” he stated. Trump also attacked climate policy and renewable energy. “Windmills are pathetic,” and the carbon footprint is “a hoax,” he asserted. “If the green energy scam is not abandoned, the country will fail,” he warned. Citing the difficulties facing Germany as an example, Trump warned that “energy and open immigration are destroying Europe” and noted that “China now produces more CO2 than all other developed countries in the world.”
