On Friday 19 September, at 7.30 p.m., the Berkana bookshop (Hortaleza street, 62) will host a must-see event for lovers of literature, philosophy and queer studies: the presentation report of Foucault’s in Warsaw.
Its author, the Polish writer and philosopher Remigiusz Ryziński -a theorist in gender and queer studies- will talk to David Velduque, film director and creator of the podcast Taste of Queer, in a meeting which promises to explore not only the stay of the famous French philosopher in communist Warsaw, but also offer an intimate portrait of the life of the Polish gay community at that time. Free admission until capacity is full.
In 1958, Michel Foucault comes to Poland to take over the newly created Centre for French Culture at the University of Warsaw. However, less than a year later, he is forced to leave Poland for a reason that remains unclear, but which seems to be linked to Foucault’s relationship with a young man used as an informant by the Polish secret police. This book explores and investigates the circumstances of the philosopher’s hasty return to France and gives us a detailed picture of the life of the gay community in communist Poland.
