Aquí Europa/The Diplomat

A delegation of MEPs will travel to Tenerife and Gran Canaria to analyze the challenges arising from migratory pressure in the region. The delegation, composed of six members of the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, will be led by the committee's president, Bogdan Rzońca, and will assess both the impact of migration on the daily lives of Canarian citizens and the response of local, national, and European authorities to this situation.
During their visit to Tenerife, between September 15 and 17, the MEPs will visit a first-arrival center, where they will be able to learn firsthand about the situation of migrants arriving on the islands. In addition, they will hold meetings with representatives of Frontex, the EU Asylum Agency, and with the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo. The following day, the delegation will travel to Gran Canaria, where they will continue with visits to first-arrival centers and meetings with representatives of migrant communities and local neighborhood associations. They will also meet with judicial authorities and the prosecutor in charge of unaccompanied minor cases, as well as with the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana. On Wednesday, September 17, the delegation will focus on the education and integration of unaccompanied minors. They will visit a high school and hold meetings with organizations working on the integration of these minors, as well as with operational units of the National Police and Civil Guard, and with the Red Cross and Maritime Rescue. With this mission, the European Parliament seeks to gain firsthand insight into the challenges facing the islands and evaluate possible solutions at the European level.
