Spain is following “with concern” the events in Nepal, which have resulted in the deaths of around twenty people in serious unrest and the destruction of public buildings, including the Parliament building in Kathmandu.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spain conveys its condolences to the families and friends of the victims and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured, and calls for an investigation into the incidents.

“The Government of Spain calls for restraint and dialogue between political and social actors to prevent an escalation of violence, guarantee full respect for fundamental rights, and respond to the legitimate aspirations of the population,” it concludes.

The Nepalese Army has deployed across the country to try to contain the unrest that erupted on Monday as a result of a massive youth uprising against political corruption. The demonstrations began in response to the government’s decision to ban messaging and social media. At least 25 protesters have died so far.

In addition, 2,000 prisoners have escaped, and military authorities have declared a nationwide curfew to contain looting, arson, and loss of life. Parliament has been stormed and set on fire. As a result of the violence, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday.
