Spain “strongly” condemns Israel’s bombing of Hamas in Qatar

Eduardo González The Spanish government on Tuesday "strongly" condemned the Israeli bombing of a Hamas delegation in Qatar, which took place hours after the Israeli government agreed to US President Donald Trump's latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. "This attack constitutes a violation of Qatari territorial sovereignty and a flagrant violation of international law," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in a statement. "Spain reiterates its call for restraint and respect for international law to preserve regional stability, an immediate cessation of violence, and a return to diplomatic negotiations," it continued. "Spain reiterates its commitment to stability in the Middle East and will continue working with its partners for regional stability," it concluded. “I strongly condemn Israel's attack on Qatari territory. It is a flagrant violation of Qatari sovereignty and international law. This attack represents a further stray from peace with a dangerous escalation,” Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares wrote on social media. “I strongly condemn the Israeli attack on Qatar. Violating its sovereignty and territory is a clear violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter. Violence cannot continue to spread unchecked throughout the Middle East. It is time to return to the framework of rationality, diplomacy, and international law,” wrote Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Israeli forces attacked the negotiating delegation of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Tuesday while it was meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar, to discuss the US ceasefire proposal. “Attack on the Hamas negotiating delegation during its meeting in Doha. The meeting was attacked while President Trump's ceasefire proposal was being discussed,” a senior Hamas source told the Qatari media outlet Al Jazeera. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari “strongly” condemned Israel's bombing “of residential buildings housing several members of the political bureau in Doha” and announced the opening of an investigation “at the highest level” into this “cowardly attack.” For its part, the Israeli army reported that it was “a targeted attack against the leadership” of Hamas. “For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have directed the terrorist group's operations, are directly responsible for the brutal massacre of October 7, and have been orchestrating and managing the war against the State of Israel,” he added. The target of the attack was a building where the Hamas delegation, whose members survived the attack, was negotiating the latest truce proposal in Gaza, presented by Trump. Before the bombing, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced that Israel had accepted Trump's proposal on the condition that Hamas release all hostages in the Gaza Strip and lay down its weapons.
