In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed today that “we are an important part of supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty” and affirmed that “the best guarantee of security for Ukraine is to strengthen its army,” at a time when Europe is seeking to reinforce its role in the conflict.
Albares emphasized that Spain is providing Ukraine not only with military equipment, but also with financial and humanitarian aid, in addition to hosting more than 200,000 Ukrainian refugees on Spanish soil. He noted that all this support aims to guarantee “the security, sovereignty and freedom” of the country at war, a task in which Spain wants to play a relevant role.
Asked about the possibility of extending NATO-style Article 5 guarantees to Ukraine, Albares was clear: “Article 5 is not something that is on the table right now,” although he acknowledged the interest expressed by other European leaders in contributing to security guarantees.
The minister also defended the importance of a shared European approach: “We are an important part of supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty,” he said, underlining his commitment to EU solidarity as a pillar against Russian aggression.
Finally, Albares recalled that Spain’s effort is not limited to military support: it has also included economic assistance, humanitarian aid and concrete solidarity with those fleeing the conflict, reaffirming Spain’s commitment to European defense and continental stability.
