Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that she will receive Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels this afternoon and that both will take part in a videoconference with European leaders from the Coalition of the Willing. Tomorrow, at the request of the Ukrainian president, the President of the European Commission will join the meeting at the White House with Donald Trump and other European leaders.
In Brussels, von der Leyen and Zelensky will lead a videoconference of the Coalition of the Willing to coordinate positions ahead of the meeting in Washington. The aim is to arrive with a common message on political, military, and financial support for Kyiv, as well as on the framework for possible security guarantees.
After their meeting, the two issued a statement stressing that peace must be based on “solid security guarantees” and that “international borders cannot be changed by force.” The President also emphasized that “there can be no limits on the Ukrainian armed forces or on their cooperation with third countries,” and that Russia “cannot veto” Ukraine’s European and Atlantic path.
Tomorrow, von der Leyen will accompany Zelensky to the White House to take part in the meeting with Trump and other European leaders. The expectation is to convey a united and coherent European position, as well as to explore diplomatic steps that keep Ukraine at the center of any future negotiations.
