The Diplomat

The Magdalena Palace in Santander will host the third edition of the seminar "Spain in the World" from July 14 to 17. This seminar is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) and it will be inaugurated by the Minister, José Manuel Albares.
"In an international context marked by the rise of armed conflicts, the erosion of the multilateral system, and growing economic fragmentation, this edition will bring together leading international policymakers, analysts, and academics to reflect on the role of Spain and the European Union in a world undergoing profound transformation," the Foreign Affairs Ministry stated in a press release. The course, led by Federico Torres Muro, Spain's Permanent Representative to NATO, will be inaugurated by José Manuel Albares and will include the participation of the Ministry's four Secretaries of State: Diego Martínez Belío, Fernando Sampedro, Eva Granados, and Susana Sumelzo. Over the course of four days, the current priorities of Spain's foreign policy, as reflected in the recent Foreign Action Strategy 2025-2028, will be explored: promoting a more ambitious and cohesive European Union, greater involvement in our strategic environment and strengthening our economic security, preserving, reforming, and reinforcing the multilateral system, strengthening relations with Latin America, defending development financing in the face of the global solidarity crisis, and a firm response to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The new dynamics of geoeconomics will be addressed with Michael Pettis and Martin Sandbu, the geopolitical role of India with Raja Mohan, and the challenges of European security with Elena Lazarou, John Chipman, and Matthew Kroenig. The future of the European Union will also be reflected upon with Enrico Letta, Luuk van Middelaar, Georgina Wright, and Marcos Alonso. Manal Radwan, Carmen Magariños, and Pol Morillas will analyze the impact of the rise in international conflicts. Feliciano Guimarães, Cristina Manzano, and Elisa Díaz Gras will discuss the Ibero-American agenda, while Ignacio Corlazzoli, Iliana Olivié, Hernán Sáenz, and Mónica Colomer will examine the current challenges of financing for development. Additionally, Marc López, Alba Leiva, and Álvaro Imbernón will discuss global trends and the handling of international information.
