The Madrid public will be able to enjoy this second edition of the Mexican Film Week from 11 to 20 July in 12 venues distributed throughout the capital, reaffirming the cultural ties between Mexico and Spain through a diverse and high-quality film programming.
More than 45 screenings of fiction and documentary premieres, family cinema, a retrospective dedicated to the Mexican stage of Luis Buñuel, and a tribute to the renowned photographer and director Rodrigo Prieto, essential figure of contemporary cinema at an international level.
This cultural initiative returns to the city to bring to the public the best of contemporary and classic Mexican cinema, consolidating a space for meeting, reflection and enjoyment around the Seventh Art. The program also includes colloquia and masterful meetings with special guests, including directors, actors, producers and screenwriters who have marked the recent history of Mexican cinema.
In this second edition will take part rooms that are emblematic spaces such as the Academy of cinema, Cinema Doré and Cinema Studio of the Circle of Fine Arts; an edition more participating Cinemas Yelmo, the Cultural Center Paco Rabal and the Cultural Center Pilar Miró; and join the Equis Room, the Cines Embajadores and the Hotel Casa de las Artes Meliá Collection. The venues will offer accessible and in some cases free sessions, with the aim of facilitating access to diverse programming representative of Mexico’s cultural wealth.
The program will include fiction premieres such as Sobreviviendo a mis XV (2023) directed by Chava Cartas; Arillo de hombre muerto (2024) directed by Alejandro Gerber Bicecci; Violentas mariposas (2024) directed by Adolfo Dávila; Vergüenza (2024) by Miguel Salgado; and Martínez (2023) directed by Lorena Padilla, among others.
As part of the programme dedicated to documentary premieres, we highlight Adiós caballos: las muchas vidas de Q Lazzarus (2024) under the direction of Eva Aridjis, which offers an intimate journey through the life of singer Diane Luckey, also known as Q Lazzarus; La falla (2024) directed by Alana Simões; or La libertad de Fierro (2024) by Santiago Esteinou, centered on the release of César after spending 40 years unjustly incarcerated in the death row.
The retrospective dedicated to Luis Buñuel in Mexico will include titles such as Los olvidados (1950); Viridiana (1961); Ensayo de un crimen (1955); Simón en el desierto (1965); La ilusión viaja en tranvía (1953); Él (1953); Subida al cielo (1951); Nazarín (1959); and El ángel exterminador (1962) Closing the programming on 20 July.
