The Council of Ministers on Tuesday appointed Jaime Moreno Bau, the current Director General of the Sefarad-Israel Center, to the position of Spanish Ambassador to Kenya, replacing Cristina Díaz Fernández-Gil.

Born in Madrid in 1977, with a degree in Spanish-French Law in 1999 from the Complutense University of Madrid and the Sorbonne in Paris, and a career diplomat since July 2006, Jaime Moreno Bau has served in the Spanish Embassies in Chile, South Africa (on secondment for the opening of the Spanish Consulate in Pretoria), Mozambique, and Israel. In the latter two embassies, he served as Consul and Cultural Counselor.

In Central Services, he worked during the 2007 Spanish Presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and in the Directorate General for Asia-Pacific, and was Deputy Assistant Director General for Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2019, he served as Deputy Director General for Consular Protection and Assistance to Spaniards Abroad, receiving the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit in 2021.

Since 2022, he has served as Director General of the Sefarad-Israel Center, where he will be replaced by José Eugenio Thovar, according to diplomatic sources informed The Diplomat last Friday. Jaime Moreno Bau is the brother of Ángeles Moreno Bau, the current Spanish ambassador to the United States and former State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs.
