Korean culture meets this summer in the heart of Madrid. Next Friday, July 4 at 8 pm, Centro Danza Matadero will host A dance between cultures, a free show that is part of the official program of Korea Season 2025, the international initiative driven by the Ministry of Culture, Korea Sports and Tourism and the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), together with the Centro Cultural Coreano in Spain.
This edition marks the first landing in Spain, after having been held successfully in countries such as Mexico, the United Kingdom, France or the Arab Emirates.
The public will be able to enjoy live an exceptional show of contemporary Korean dance: three internationally awarded companies will present their most acclaimed works in an evening that fuses cultures, bodies, music and emotion.
Under the motto Two cultures, one heart, Korea Season proposes a space of encounter between Korea and the Spanish public through the arts. This event will bring together three of the most prominent contemporary dance companies in the country, selected for their ability to connect tradition and avant-garde. His proposals have been awarded at international festivals for their originality and artistic excellence: Choe Contemporary Dance Company – Their Argument, founded by choreographer Sang-cheul Choe, the company explores the dialogue between contemporary dance and urban styles such as bboying and hip hop; HOO Dance Company – Breathing Dream, under the direction of Sun-hoo Yoo, this piece combines improvisation, traditional Korean percussion and pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), in an intuitive and immersive choreographic experience, and Humanstance – SINAWI, directed by Jae-hyuk Cho, former principal dancer of the National Dance Company of Korea, this proposal transforms the expressiveness of traditional Korean dance into a powerful emotional contemporary language.
The experience begins upon arrival in space. The public will be greeted in the lobby with an installation dedicated to contemporary Korean musicals (K-Creation Showcase) and can enjoy a tasting of traditional Korean sweets, as a sensory introduction to the country’s culture.
The evening will also feature key presences from both countries. María Pagés, artistic director of Centro Danza Matadero and one of the great figures of Spanish dance, will open the event with a welcome. On the Korean side, Sinah Kim, director of Korea Season 2025, will offer an institutional intervention that reflects the spirit of cultural exchange. In addition, the renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be present as guest of honour.
