Eduardo González

The Cortes Generales (Spanish Parliament) have urged the Government to "adopt all necessary actions at the national and international levels to contribute to the definitive cessation of the massacre that the Palestinian people are suffering" and to continue promoting "in the main international forums" the recognition of "the States of Israel and Palestine."
The Non-Law Proposal, presented by the Socialist Parliamentary Group and approved in its terms on June 12 by the Joint Committee of Congress and the Senate on the European Union, urges the Executive to "adopt all necessary actions at the national and international levels to contribute to the definitive cessation of the massacre that the Palestinian people are suffering in any international forum that allows progress to be made toward ending the conflict and guaranteeing coexistence among the different peoples in compliance with current international law." It also urges the government to "adopt the necessary measures to accelerate the end of the humanitarian blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip and to guarantee the actions of humanitarian agencies operating in the area under the umbrella of the United Nations" and to "increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to the main international organizations responsible for delivering it to the main victims of the war, in compliance by Israel with its international obligations regarding access to humanitarian aid to Gaza." The text calls on the government to continue "promoting in the main international forums the implementation of the UN resolution of November 29, 1947, which recognized the States of Israel and Palestine." On this point, the People's Party (EPP) Parliamentary Group presented an amendment, which failed, to add the phrase "through a negotiating process." Finally, the motion urges the Executive to "demand that the other EU member states act along the lines of the four previous points in order to accelerate the end of the conflict and urgently provide humanitarian assistance to the population of Gaza." The PP attempted to replace this paragraph with a point urging the Government to "promote among European Union member states action in a coordinated manner consistent with the principles of international humanitarian law, promoting a permanent ceasefire, urgent and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the necessary impetus for a negotiated and viable solution based on the two-state solution." For its part, the far-right Vox party presented an amendment rejecting all the points and calling for, among other things, a rectification of "the Government's position before the European Union institutions on the review of funds allocated to Palestine in order to ensure that they do not end up in the hands of terrorist organizations" and the "suspension of the sending of Spanish funds destined for development cooperation in the areas of Palestine controlled by the terrorist group Hamas, until the appropriate verifications have been carried out on the ultimate purpose of said funds and there are full guarantees that they will not finance the perpetration of acts of terrorism."
