On the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the independence of Algeria -which will take place on 5 July-, Casa Árabe hosts next Thursday at 8 pm the concert Andalusian Troubadours: Algerian maluf evening with Cheikh Salim Fergani, organized by the Embassy of Algeria. Reserve a place to attend this link.

Salim Fergani, known as “Constantine’s Troubadour”, is one of the most prominent figures of Andalusian music in Algeria. Born into a family of musicians in the city of Constantine, he inherited the legacy of his father, Mohamed Tahar Fergani, master of maluf-the local variant of Andalusian music. Salim has dedicated his life to preserving and revitalizing this ancestral genre, combining rigorous fidelity to traditional forms with a contemporary sensibility. A virtuoso of the Arabic lute (oud) and possessing a refined voice, Fergani has taken the maluf to international stages, acting as cultural ambassador of Algeria and keeping alive the rich musical heritage of the Maghreb.

With these elements, Salim has achieved a new sensitivity of interpretation of the old poems performed in traditional melodies, obtaining his own style and personality. Tours around the world have given it an international dimension and the nickname of “Constantine’s Troubadour”. Salim masterfully interprets all the traditional genres of singing: maluf, silsila, hawzi, mahdjúz,  ruby, qadriya and zdjúl.

The concert is presented and contextualized by musician, editor and producer Eduardo Paniagua, whose PNEUMA label has recently published Regresarán los días pasados (Zéjel marinero), Amantes del fuego de la pasión y Trovadores andalusíes, three CDs of Andalusian music from Constantina, Algeria.
