“It was a real honour for me to have taken up the post of ambassador to Spain, a country that is an important ally and close friend to Slovenia.” These were the words with which the Ambassador of Slovenia, Tadej Rupel, began his speech during the reception he held on the occasion of his country’s National Day.

“We are united by similar positions on the most important EU issues and concerns about the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, especially in Palestine. An example of the excellent relations between Slovenia and Spain is the exceptional dynamic of contacts and mutual visits”, said the ambassador.

The Slovenian ambassador highlighted the official visit to Madrid of his country’s prime minister, Robert Golob, and his meeting with his counterpart, Pedro Sánchez. “This meeting, pointed out Tadej Rupel, confirmed that the common positions are an excellent basis for deepening cooperation between two like-minded EU Member States sharing the Mediterranean dimension. Our countries have an outstanding relationship at all levels and in all spheres, including the economic sphere, where we are experiencing a positive trend in trade.”

Referring to the Slovenian presidency of the MED-9 group, the ambassador indicated that “we are working to further strengthen the role and visibility of the MED-9 in the EU and the Mediterranean. We are collaborating in enhancing the region’s resilience through improved competitiveness and empowerment and capacity development, as well as close coordination on current foreign policy issues”.

The Slovenian ambassador concluded his speech by underlining that “as Slovenia’s permanent representative to UN Tourism, it is an honour to announce that Slovenia has been elected for the first time to the UN Tourism Executive Board for the period 2025-2029. Thank you all for your support. We look forward to future collaboration also in this context”.
