Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced this Thursday that more than 40 Spaniards have been evacuated from Tehran and have arrived in Armenia in a convoy made available by the Ministry.
“The first phase of the evacuation of Spaniards has concluded successfully,” Albares announced in a video released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Spaniards, “residents and transients in Tehran,” “wanted to be part of the convoy made available by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs” and “have happily crossed the border with Armenia.”
“There are just over 40 Spaniards, as well as some citizens of other nationalities,” he continued. “We hope that in a few hours they will be flying to Spain, where they can be reunited with their families,” he added.
“Of course, the Spanish Embassy in Tehran remains fully operational, and I urge all Spaniards in Iran who have not contacted the embassy to do so and follow the security instructions” issued by the embassy through social media.
Albares met this Thursday with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ crisis team to monitor the situation of Spaniards in Iran and Israel and discuss contact with the embassies in both countries, the minister reported on social media. “I appreciate the magnificent work of the Spanish Embassy in Iran and the consular emergency unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in protecting our citizens,” he wrote.
