‘Royal Consorts, Wives and Husbands of the Monarchy’, by Cristina Barreiro
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Author: Cristina Barreiro.

Some were loved, others respected and some even hated. Cristina Barreiro, Professor of Contemporary History at the CEU-San Pablo University, talks about them in her book Royal Consorts, Wives and Husbands of the Monarchy from the 18th century to the present. But if there is one thing clear, it is that they almost never leave anyone indifferent. They do not pass or promulgate laws and do not convene or dissolve the Cortes Generales. Unlike the sovereign, they have neither obligations nor responsibilities: it is the busy schedules of kings and queens who have been filling the lives of their partners with acts, trips or official events. However, the role of these figures in the Court has not been less important: throughout history they have played an institutional role and served, with varying degrees of success, the interests of the Crown.

Professor Cristina Barreiro will be the speaker of the next colloquium organized by The Diplomat in Spain and the Association of Foreign Diplomats (ADE) on July 8 at 6 pm at the Hotel Meliá Princesa, entitled The Borbones in Spain: from Philip V to Philip VI.
