The Diplomat
The Instituto Cervantes and the City Council of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) have signed an agreement to extend for another ten years the free use of the institution’s current headquarters in this city. The building is located in the Colegio del Rey, on Calle Libreros, and is used for academic projects and activities.
The signing took place this past Monday in the presence of the director of the Instituto Cervantes, Luis García Montero, and the mayor of Alcalá, Judith Piquet. Both institutions signed a collaboration agreement on September 26, 2003, to regulate the transfer of use in favor of the Instituto Cervantes.
This new agreement reflects the “satisfaction” of both parties with the collaboration achieved to date, according to the main institution of Spanish cultural diplomacy.
The signed document updates the terms of the collaboration carried out on the building for a new period, including the provision that the Instituto Cervantes may apply for grants for the renovation of the building or the partial or total improvement of its facilities.
Thus, the City Council undertakes to maintain the lease of the property for a further ten-year period, extending it, provided the parties expressly agree, for five-year periods, up to a maximum of 75 years.
Likewise, both parties agree to negotiate the appropriate amendment, establishing a 20-year term, in the event that the Institute carries out comprehensive renovations or other works in the building for a value exceeding one million euros.
