Until next August 31, in its mission to show the best of Mexican art and culture, the Fundación Casa de México presents the exhibition Lourdes Grobet and the Peasant and Indigenous Theater Laboratory, an emotional and revealing visual tour through the work of the Laboratorio de Teatro Campesino e Indígena (LTCI), through the lens of the renowned Mexican photographer Lourdes Grobet (1940-2022).

The exhibition, curated by Beatriz Mackenzie and Ximena Pérez Grobet within the official section of the XXVIII edition of the PHotoESPAÑA Festival, exhibits 73 photographs selected from the more than 25,000 images that Grobet made over three decades of accompanying the LTCI.

The LCTI, founded and directed for 50 years by the playwright María Alicia Martínez Medrano, was a pioneering space of collective scenic creation with communities originating from the Mexican southeast. Through the theatre, the project promoted the rescue and dignification of oral traditions, local knowledge and indigenous languages, working with Chontal, Chol, Zoque, Maya, Mayo and Nahuatl peoples.

Grobet, a privileged witness of this process, built an exceptional visual archive that documents not only the productions but also the group’s trips, workshops and meetings inside and outside Mexico.

Lourdes Grobet and the Laboratorio de Teatro Campesino e Indígena celebrate the artistic and social commitment of Grobet, whose work was characterized by a critical and empathetic look at popular cultural expressions in Mexico. His legacy, which includes photography, film, publications and installations, has been fundamental to the visual history of contemporary Mexican art.
