Eduardo González

The President of the Government Pedro Sánchez called this Monday for an end to "barbarism" in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli army dismantled the last remaining operational hospital in the northern part of the enclave.
"I appeal to the words of the Pope: for humanity, for decency, for justice, this barbarism must stop," Sánchez declared during his speech at the inauguration of the Melilla University Hospital. "Television opens daily with images of hospitals in ruins destroyed by bombs, as is happening in Gaza," the President of the Government denounced after the Israeli army ordered the forced displacement of the Palestinian population from the north to the south of the Strip. This order has affected the Al Awda Hospital, located in the Jabalia refugee camp and the only medical shelter in the northern part of the enclave with the capacity to provide healthcare. This center, according to Sánchez, had continued to operate "thanks to the courage of a handful of professionals." As an example of this, he remembered the hundreds of doctors and nurses who have lost their lives "for not leaving their patients behind" and who "have literally died embracing the civilians they sought to save until the very end." "Today, more than ever, with emotion, I believe it is necessary to honor their memory in this event that takes place on the shores of the same sea that unites Palestine with Spain," Sánchez added, paraphrasing Pope Leo XIV. For his part, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares wrote on social media that "the last hospital in Gaza has ceased to function." "The bombings continue today (Sunday) near an aid distribution center," he denounced. “Israel must stop this inhumane war now. The people of Gaza, their children, deserve health, education, and dignity,” the minister warned, once again “demanding” compliance with international humanitarian law, the “unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of the hostages.” “The international community must work to stop this war and implement the two-state solution,” he concluded.
