The Instituto Francés is screening the documentary ‘Indias Galantes’ by Philippe Béziat

This Afternoon at 7.30 pm, the Instituto Francés de Madrid will be screening the documentary Indias Galantes, a unique adventure where urban dance meets lyrical singing to reinvent opera as never before. Reservations at this link.

On the occasion of the opera-ballet Las Indias Galantes, which will be presented at the Teatro Real de Madrid from 28 May to 1 June, the Instituto Francés de Madrid offers this screening, followed by a colloquium with specialists of this masterpiece.

In 2019, Philippe Béziat revisits the famous opera-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau with the help of Clément Cogitore and Bintou Dembélé. They bet to bring together on stage 30 dancers from hip-hop, krump or voguing along with the original musicians and lyrical singers of this masterpiece.

From rehearsals to public functions, we follow a human adventure and an encounter with political implications: can a new generation of artists take the Bastille today?

The result was a resounding success: a contemporary version of Les Indias Galantes, committed, modern and provocative, culminated by the incandescent force of an explosive ending.

Philippe Béziat films, from the point of view of urban dancers, the preparation of this show, from casting sessions to the first performances at the Opéra de la Bastille. It is a “decolonial reading” of the opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Beyond the political and social issues that are sometimes addressed in a fleeting way, this documentary offers a fascinating immersion into the process of creating an artistic work. From the first rehearsals to the final moments before going on stage, it opens the doors to the viewer of the ins and outs of this extraordinary show, while revealing dance scenes of a striking beauty. In the intimacy of its interpreters, this documentary narrates, first and foremost, a human adventure where artists from different universes meet, discover each other and learn to work together until they form a unity in perfect harmony.
