President of the Government Pedro Sánchez will travel to Brussels on May 28 to meet with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, according to sources from Moncloa (the Spanish government) who spoke to the news agencies Efe and Europa Press, without providing further details.
The agenda for the meeting between Sánchez and Von der Leyen has not yet been specified. In any case, the meeting will take place one month before the last European Council meeting before the summer, which will address issues such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, EU defense and security, and migration.
Furthermore, the meeting follows the Commission’s decision to review the EU Association Agreement with Israel for non-compliance with the human rights clause, a common request from Spain. Last week, Sánchez was the only European leader invited to the Arab League summit in Baghdad, Iraq, where member states praised Spain’s stance in favor of a Palestinian state and against the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The meeting also comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on the EU. The meeting will also take place one day after the General Affairs Council debates in Brussels on the official status of Catalan, Basque, and Galician in the European Union.
