The state visit planned for this week by the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, to Spain has been postponed “until further notice,” according to the state news agency.
The Omani monarch was planning to begin a state visit from Tuesday to Thursday, which would include a meeting with the King and Queen at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Wednesday and an interview the following day with the President of the Government Pedro Sánchez.
Had it taken place, it would have been the first state visit by a foreign leader to Spain since May 3, 2023, when the visit by Colombian President Gustavo Petro took place. No other international leader has traveled to our country since then under the state visit protocol.
Although the state news agency did not specify the reasons for the postponement, Oman’s own royal family announced on Monday the death of the mother of the Sultan’s wife, Ahad bint Abdullah Al Busaidiyah, and Zarzuela added that the visit was “postponed until further notice.”
