The Diplomat

The President of the Government Pedro Sánchez will take advantage of his participation in the European Political Community and Arab League summits, which will take place this Friday and Saturday in Tirana and Baghdad, to seek support for his intention to submit a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly to end the Gaza conflict.
On the other hand, Sánchez will speak this Friday in the Albanian capital, Tirana, at the sixth meeting of the European Political Community (EPC), where the topics of security and democratic resilience in Europe will be discussed, including Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, competitiveness and economic security, and the challenges of mobility and youth training. Despite these agenda items, according to sources at Moncloa, Sánchez's intention is to seek support for his intention to present a draft resolution at the UN General Assembly to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip, end the Israeli blockade, and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid. To this end, the Prime Minister will try to organize, with the support of Iceland, a meeting on the sidelines of the European Parliament's General Assembly dedicated to Gaza. This meeting will include countries that are on the same page as Sánchez regarding this conflict, such as Ireland, Norway, Luxembourg, and Slovenia. The following day, Pedro Sánchez will participate, at the invitation of the Iraqi government, in the Arab League Summit in Baghdad. He will be the only European leader present (apart from UN Secretary-General António Guterres). The summit will primarily address the situations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. In the Iraqi capital, Sánchez will announce to the leaders of the 22 Arab League member states his intention to present the aforementioned draft resolution to the UN General Assembly. Sources at Moncloa have confirmed that the Prime Minister is coordinating with the Palestinian Authority and several European and Arab countries to explore the best time to present the draft resolution and to secure the greatest possible number of supporters for the text. To present a draft resolution, it is necessary to request its inclusion on the agenda of a session of the General Assembly, for which the Palestinian Authority itself is being considered.
