Next Tuesday, May 20 at 6 pm, Casa América presents in its Miguel de Cervantes Room, the book Early pioneers of theatre in Costa Rica. Scenic trades in a baroque festivals of the eighteenth century, by Jorge Arroyo Pérez. Free entry until capacity is complete.

This book addresses the founding theatrical manifestations in a colonial province of the Spanish empire. The author notes that modern scenic activity in Costa Rica arose at the end of the first quarter of the eighteenth century; a time when dramaturgy also began on Costa Rican territory, with the first work written by Governor Diego De la Haya Fernández. At that time, Costa Rica was a territory far from the centers of power of the Spanish empire; however, in its capital occurred some baroque festivals managed by an efficient Iberian official, fighter against corsairs and applied administrator, but also an artist eager to do theater and organizer of mass events, who wanted to try himself by structuring complex programs of festive public activities.

Moisés Morera, Director of Programming at Casa de América; Pura Fernández, Director of the Editorial Board of the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research, CSIC, and Adriana Bolaños Argueta, Ambassador of Costa Rica, will give a welcome address.

José-Luis García Barrientos, Research Professor at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC, and Jorge Arroyo Pérez, Costa Rican playwright, writer, researcher and author of the book will participate. Ángela Núñez, journalist and director of RNE’s ‘A Language Without Borders’ program will moderate.
