The Georgian government has officially withdrawn its support for Zurab Pololikashvili’s candidacy for re-election as Secretary-General of UN Tourism and announced that it will support the candidate nominated by the United Arab Emirates.
The Georgian government has decided to withdraw Pololikashvili’s candidacy unilaterally and of its own volition, the Georgian government told Interpressnews, without explaining the reasons. Zurab Pololikashvili, who has held the position since 2018, had initially been nominated by the Georgian government.
Government sources have denied that the withdrawal of support is related to the emergence of a particular candidate. “The candidacy was withdrawn by the government’s own volition, unrelated to any other names in the running,” the government said in a statement. “We confirm that Georgia will support the candidate nominated by the United Arab Emirates,” it added.
