The Spanish government has paid tribute to José ‘Pepe’ Mujica, president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, who died this Tuesday at the age of 89 after battling esophageal cancer for several months.

“A better world. That’s what Pepe Mujica believed in, fought for, and lived for,” wrote Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on social media. “Politics takes on meaning when it’s lived like this, from the heart,” he continued. “My deepest sympathy to his family and to Uruguay,” he added.

For his part, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares declared, also on social media: “Rest in peace, Pepe Mujica. A universal Uruguayan, a leader in Latin America and the world for dignity and the fight against poverty, for social justice and for the environment. His example will always guide us.”

“Mujica is an example of strength and hope. Your words will always be with us,” wrote Second Vice President Yolanda Díaz. “We will miss your encouragement, comrade. We will continue to carry on your legacy,” she concluded.
