The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, met this Tuesday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Republic of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, on the occasion of President Daniel Noboa’s visit to Spain.

Albares, who took advantage of the meeting to congratulate his counterpart on her confirmation as Foreign Minister, expressed confidence that this new mandate of the Ecuadorian government will allow progress on the reforms her country needs, while reiterating Spain’s full support, according to a press release from the Foreign Ministry.

The minister also noted that Spain is the second largest foreign investor in Ecuador and its largest trading partner within the European Union. He expressed confidence in continuing to strengthen economic ties, fostering a predictable environment for investment and trade, and leveraging the potential of agreements with the European Union.

Regarding Development Cooperation, Albares reiterated Spain’s desire to continue being a committed partner in Ecuador’s institutional and social development and specified that, through both AECID and FIAP, our country can continue supporting its priorities in key areas such as justice, ecological transition, security, and social cohesion.

The minister also expressed his gratitude for Ecuador’s efforts in organizing the recent Ibero-American Summit in Cuenca and noted that Spain is already working on preparing for the next Summit in 2026, where he hoped to count on Ecuador’s support and participation.
