The Xunta de Galicia will offer, for the first time, Galician courses in New York through the Instituto Cervantes center in this American city, as announced by the Secretary General of the Galician Language, Valentín García, during a visit to the center.
The objective of these courses is to expand knowledge of the language “beyond our land” and to give “prestige” to the Galician language “through a renowned institution” and in a “strategic location” like New York, stated García, who was accompanied by the director of the Instituto Cervantes in New York, Javier Valdivieso Odriozola; the Consul General of Spain in New York, Marta de Blas; and the course manager, Álex Alonso.
These courses, he explained, will allow us to “maintain the cultural connection with the Galician communities living abroad” and, at the same time, “offer interested people the opportunity to learn more about our culture and our language.” “Knowing how to communicate in Galician also connects us to the world through Portuguese-speaking countries, with more than 270 million speakers,” he added.
This initiative joins the other Galician and Spanish language courses that the Instituto Cervantes already offers at its various centers. “With this addition, we expand our commitment to highlighting the co-official languages and the culture and identity of the different territories throughout the country,” stated Valentín García, quoted last week on the Xunta de Galicia website.
