Next Monday, April 28 at 7.30 pm, the Instituto Italiano de Cultura in Madrid will present the book Leonardo and architecture, a work that reveals the deep influence of Leonardo da Vinci in the world of construction.
The meeting will be attended by Sabine Frommel, author and coordinator; Pedro Galera, director of the Arts and Humanities Collection; and Marta Torres, vice-rector of Culture.
Scattered in his many manuscripts, Leonardo’s studies on architecture cover almost fifty years of his artistic life. From churches and funerary monuments to fortifications and palaces, the Florentine genius left an indelible mark on the architectural evolution of the late Quattrocento and early Cinquecento.
A team of outstanding researchers, led by Sabine Frommel, Professor of History of the Art of the Renaissance at the École Pratique des Hautes Études-PSL in Paris, and Jean Guillaume, Emeritus Professor of History of the Art of the Renaissance at the Sorbonne in Paris, together with Luis Rueda Galán, researcher Juan de la Cierva at the CSIC’s History Institute, has spent years unraveling the relationship between Leonardo da Vinci and architecture.
In this book, the authors invite the reader on a journey through Leonardo’s drawings, which show the ideas of the pioneers of Renaissance architecture and analyse particular aspects such as interventions in existing structures, the classical orders, the stairs and the decoration. In addition, the study sheds light on Leonardo’s dialogue with great masters of his time such as Bramante, Michelangelo and others.
