On the occasion of the 20th edition of La Noche de los Libros, the great festival of literature organized by the Community of Madrid, the Instituto Italiano de Cultura in Madrid presents next Friday 25 April at 7 pm the documentary by Davide Ferrario: Umberto Eco-The library of the world.
Umberto Eco’s private library was a world apart, with more than 30,000 contemporary volumes and 1,500 rare and ancient books. Director Davide Ferrario, who had collaborated with Eco on a video installation at the Venice Biennale in 2015, one year before his death, had access to the library thanks to the active collaboration of the family. This gave rise to a documentary that not only describes an extraordinary place, but tries to convey the very sense of the idea of library as a “memory of the world”, as defined by Eco himself.
“If, for Echo, the library was a metaphor of the world, his personal one was not a simple collection of books, but the key to reading to understand his ideas and inspiration. And also the place where, after death, his spirit lives intact”, said Davide Ferrario.
