Spain expresses its condolences for the death of 100 people at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic

"The Government of Spain expresses its solidarity and condolences to the people and Government of the Dominican Republic for the tragic loss of life at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. "In these difficult times, Spain stands with the families and loved ones of those affected," it added. "Deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at a nightclub in Santo Domingo," Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on social media. "My condolences and solidarity go to the families and friends of the victims and to the sisterly Dominican people and their government," he added. Around 100 people died and more than 150 were injured when the roof of a nightclub collapsed in Santo Domingo during a concert, according to the Emergency Operations Center (COE). The incident occurred at the Jet Set nightclub around 1:00 a.m. (local time, 7:00 a.m. in Spain) during a concert by merengue singer Rubby Pérez, whose condition is unknown. Among the fatalities is the governor of Monte Cristi, Nelsy Cruz. The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has traveled to the scene of the tragedy and declared national mourning for April 8, 9, and 10, according to the Presidency. "This has been a true tragedy for the country," he declared. This is the second deadliest accident in the Dominican Republic in the last 20 years, surpassed only by a fire in March 2005 at the Higüey prison, which left 136 dead. For its part, the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement, transmitted by its embassy in Madrid, stating that "the Dominican Republic is immersed in sadness and pain due to the tragedy that occurred at an entertainment center in Santo Domingo, which has left a large number of people injured and dead." "We appreciate the expressions of solidarity from our sister nations in the face of this terrible situation that has shocked our entire country," it added.
