Tomorrow, Tuesday at 7.30 p.m., a round-table discussion on Saving the Ocean will be held at the Instituto Francés in Madrid in preparation for the Third United Nations Conference on the Oceans (UNOC3), co-organized by France and Costa Rica, to be held in Nice next June.
This conference, dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of oceans, will bring together Governments, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations, the scientific and academic community, companies and a number of key actors to drive and coordinate global action to halt the degradation of marine ecosystems and promote Sustainable Development Goal 14.
The round table will include:
– María del Carmen García Martínez, CSIC researcher and former director of the Oceanographic Institute of Malaga and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). Specialist in global warming in the Mediterranean Sea, has participated in numerous research projects funded by both the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Junta de Andalucía, European Union and National R & D & I Plan. He has led several oceanographic research campaigns and represented the IEO in various European forums and projects.
– Rémi Parmentier, veteran of the defense of the Ocean, co-founder and director of the Varda Group, a consultancy specialized in strategic development and consulting. Currently leads “Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean”, a project he launched in 2023 to increase UNOC3 ambition. Also participates in the ongoing multilateral negotiations for a United Nations treaty to prevent and combat plastic pollution.
– Romain Troublé, Director General of the Tara Océan Foundation and president of the Ocean and Climate platform, who helped to include the Ocean in the Preamble of the Paris Agreement during COP21. In 2025, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
The event will be moderated by Itziar Martín Partida, deputy director general for the protection of the sea at the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
