Sumar asks the government about two possible arms shipments to Israel in January of this year

Eduardo González The Plurinational Parliamentary Group Sumar has asked the government about two possible arms exports to Israel recorded in January 2025 by the Foreign Trade portal DataComex, which reports to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business. In a written parliamentary question filed on March 24, the party led by Second Vice President Yolanda Díaz cited a report by the Solidarity Network Against the Occupation of Palestine (RESCOP) regarding two alleged "export flows" of arms to Israel for a total value of €22,725. Specifically, as The Diplomat has been able to confirm, the government database DataComex (which compiles statistics on foreign trade in goods from Spain and the EU) displays, highlighted in red next to an alert sign (an exclamation point), the following message: "In January 2025, two export flows valued at €13,977.70 appear under TARIC code 93053300 and one export flow valued at €8,747.65 under TARIC code 93051000 to Israel, which correspond to a CLASSIFICATION PENDING VERIFICATION." The two TARIC (Integrated Tariff of the European Communities) codes cited in this message correspond, precisely, to "arms, ammunition, and their parts and accessories." 93051000, more specifically, corresponds to "revolvers or pistols." For all these reasons, Sumar (a minority partner in Pedro Sánchez's administration) asks the government if it can "confirm (...) the data published on the government portal DataComex" and "who authorized this new arms sale." It also asks if "the government plans to dismiss the individuals responsible for authorizing arms sales, for violating the agreements established by the government." The Executive, and more specifically the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has repeatedly insisted that, since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, it has not sold or authorized the transit of weapons with Israel as their final destination. This was reiterated on March 26 in a parliamentary question by Sumar (March 3) on the "report published by the organizations Progressive International, American Friends Service Committee and Palestinian Youth Movement, which details and documents regular flights with military cargo from Spain to Israel between January and November 2024."
