The candidate for Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization, a member of the Greek Parliament and former Minister for Tourism, Harry Theoharis, has issued a press statement warning of the dangers of a third term in international institutions, calling it a “clear warning signal of an institutional imbalance”.
“When a general secretary seeks a third term, Theoharis continues in his statement, it is not about continuity but control”. “That which was conceived to serve many, begins to revolve around only one”.
In his candidacy for the UN World Tourism Organization, Theoharis promotes three key policy pillars: Growth, Transparency and Unity. Commits to a strict two-term limit for the secretary general, transparent governance reforms and independent oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse of power. “The UN system, he says, was built on noble ideals, but without solid internal controls, it becomes vulnerable to personalized power”.
Harris Theoharis concludes his statement with a call to the other candidates: “Let us commit publicly: no third terms, no silent autocracy, no rule manipulation. Protect the institutions we are entrusted to lead”.
It should be noted that the six nominations (Greece, Georgia, the Emirates, Mexico, Tunisia and Ghana) are legally endorsed by the UN.
